Flat screen specialist, Displaze has just introduced an extremely high brightness LCD solution for applications demanding high visibility in bright ambient environments, including daylight viewing even in direct sunlight. Known as the High Brite D104-HB-30, the unit is a high brightness LCD solution utilizing the NEC 10.4inch colour NL6448AC33-30 TFT LCD from Sunrise Electronics. The special backlight developed by Displaze provides a luminance in excess of 1,000 Cd/m2 – this compares with 300Cd/m2 for a typical ‘high brightness’ display. The backlight also has a rugged construction and therefore is suitable for installations in marine, automotive and portable applications. The D104-HB-30 design utilizes the latest polarization conversion techniques for brightness enhancement resulting in a highly efficient LCD. Contrast enhancement, Multi-layer anit-reflective filters and protective front screens may be used in difficult viewing situations to enhance image quality. Power consumption of the LCD with backlight is less than 30 Watts. The half brightness life of the D104-HB-30 backlight is rated at 20,000 hours at the recommended lamp current for full brightness 5mA. Dimming of the backlight will extend its life. In actual applications, a High Brite sunlight readable display will most likely be dimmed down in line with the ambient light. For example, if the backlight is dimmed down to 50% level, the lamp current decreases to about 2.5mA and the lamp life increases to well above 45,000 hours. Displaze supply the LCD with an appropriate inverter, which has an on-board pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming circuit for extremely wide range luminance adjustment. Over the entire dimming range, there is no noticeable lamp flickering and the uniformity of the backlight is well maintained. By careful design of the backlight housing, the overall screen dimensions remain within the footprint of the display. The overall thickness of the unit is a maximum of 29mm. The D104-HB-30 requires a simple power supply of +12V@2A. This is supplied to the inverter via a power cable. The D104-HB-30 is designed to meet the EC directives relating to EMC and electrical safety. However integration of the LCD into OEM products will require compliance testing. The relevant EC directives are 73/23/EEC (Low Voltage Directive) and 89/336/EEC (EMC Directive). <ends> Editors: for further information on Displaze or NEC products, please contact: Mark Cartlidge, Displaze Ltd, Unit 2, Station Approach, Wendover, HP22 6BN, ENGLAND Tel:+44 (0)1296-621141 Email: m.cartlidge@displaze.com http://www.displaze.com
